I lived this way myself for a long time.
Then one day ten years ago, I decided I had enough…
I’ll never forget “the moment”
I had been editing a very low budget independent film for over a year straight. I was consistently working seven days a week, 14 hours per day sitting in a small dark room chained to my desk. Since stringing two VHS players together as a child, my dream was to be a film editor, it was my one and only passion.
But when I finally began my career, I was confronted by the realization that I didn’t just sign up for an engaging and creative career as a storyteller, I was also entering a brutally stressful lifestyle of long hours, poor working conditions, high stress environments, and worst of all… lots of darkness and no windows.
I distinctly remember one late night where I was sitting by myself in the dark with my head in my hands as I held back tears. I was exhausted, severely burned out, suicidally depressed, and I found myself repeatedly whispering:
“I cannot live like this anymore.”
There were days that I could barely drag myself out of bed. The thought of having to take out the trash or do the dishes literally brought me to tears, and I was losing weight at an alarming rate. I was only 25 years old at the time, but I felt like I was 50. Shortly after, the executive producer of this film literally dropped dead of a heart attack at the age of 49. And if things didn’t change, I was going to be next.
As a last-ditch effort to save myself from making the mistake of ending my life, I searched online and found an integrative medicine specialist who recognized the severity of my situation and immediately started a combination of psychotherapy and antidepressants. With a little time and perspective I realized very quickly that it was the combination of my work environment, dangerously high stress levels, and poor exercise and dietary habits that led to my burnout and near-suicide.
I was sitting all day long with no regular exercise routine to speak of (and frankly I wasn’t even moving), my diet was atrocious, and my stress-levels were chronically through the roof. I vowed to myself that I would not live the next forty years of my career this way, because if I did the chances were extremely high that I wouldn’t even survive that long.
Thus began my decade-long quest of personal development.
